Frieda "Brutke" Marie Thompson

January 23rd, 1926 - June 17th, 2018

Frieda Marie Thompson (Brutke) passed away suddenly on June 17, 2018 in Tigard, Oregon at the age of 92. Frieda’s kindness, compassion, and sense of humor will be remembered and missed by all that knew her. Frieda was born in Amity, Oregon, on January 23, 1926, in a one-room cabin with no indoor plumbing. She was the 7th born of 8 children (5 girls and 3 boys). She shared memories of growing up on the farm in Amity and spending summers picking walnuts, berries, and hops. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in Amity and graduated from high school in 1944. After high school she married Paul Houston and moved to Salt Lake City, where her son David was born in 1946 and son Daniel in 1950. She later moved to Seattle, and while working as a secretary for the Department of the Navy, she met Robert Thompson. Robert and Frieda married in October 1964, and their first home together was in Edmonds, Washington with a view of the Olympic Mountains. Frieda always wanted to have a home with a view; she said that her home in Edmonds was her favorite home of all because of the spectacular view. Her daughter Brenda was born in 1969 and after that she dedicated herself to being a stay-at-home mom. Robert’s work relocated to San Francisco in 1970, where the family spent the next 11 years. Frieda never cared for California, and after Robert’s retirement from the Department of the Navy in 1981, the family moved near Hillsboro, Oregon on a hilltop with a view of 5 mountains. Frieda and Robert lived in this home until 2015. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2014. Frieda held many roles: wife, mom, grandma, sister, caregiver, and friend. In addition, she loved sewing, gardening, playing the organ, listening music by Elvis, Martin Denny, Harry Belafonte, and Liberace, spending time with her grandchildren, and caring for a variety of animals, both pets and wildlife. Frieda is survived by her daughter Brenda and her son Daniel; by grandchildren Jennifer, Jeannie, Talus, and Amanda; and by her sister Susie.

Robert and Loretta Houben

I have many fond memories of Aunt Frieda. She often sent special packages in the mail to her little nieces in Canada, as she only saw us once per year. She was an excellent seamstress, and made many delightful dresses for me which I still have in my cedar chest. She also surprised my sisters and I with gifts of dolls, my favourites being Stacey in 1968 for my birthday, and a large Madame Alexander baby doll for Christmas one year. She had a boisterous laugh and I have many happy memories of her. I will miss you, Aunt Frieda but remember you fondly.
