George Edward Callahan, 94, passed away on July 2nd. He was the third of four sons born to James and Effie Callahan in Cleveland, OH. A 1941 graduate of Cathedral Latin School, George enlisted in the Army Air Corps and became a pilot. He was predeceased by his three brothers, James, Robert and Paul, and their wives. In 1944 George married the love of his life, Eileen Evans, who gave birth to their daughter, Barbara, while he served overseas. They would have four more children, Patricia, George Jr., Daniel and Richard. George and Eileen were transferred to NY with AT&T in 1954 and raised their family in Manhasset, LI and Smoke Rise, NJ. George retired from Bell Systems in 1984 and they chose Pinehurst, NC as their new home, eventually moving to Charlotte, NC to be closer to family. George was active in the Parishes of St. Gabriel and St. Matthew Catholic Churches. He and Eileen lived their retirement to the fullest in honor of their son, George Jr., who passed away from cancer in 1984. After Eileen lost her brave battle with Alzheimer's, George found love again and married Bernice Jakel, who survives him along with his children, Barb and her husband John Aslanian, Pat Callahan, all of Westfield, NJ, Dan and his wife Laura Callahan of Myrtle Beach, SC and Rich of Charlotte, NC, and ten grandchildren, Lisa, John, Christopher, Meg, Kimberley, Pati, Amy, Matthew, Abby, and Erin. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Sally, and was blessed to be survived by 27 great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Day Chapel, Charlotte, NC on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at 1:00 PM.
