Dr. George E. Collins, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dedicated dentist, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 17, 2024, at Sunrise of McLean Village. He was 90 years old. George was born on July 6, 1933, to George H. Collins and Grace V. Duley. He grew up along side his older sister Joan P. Collins in Mount Rainier, Maryland. In 1953, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty A. Grove. Their marriage was a testament to love and partnership until her passing in 1985. George is survived by five of his six children: Greg, Belinda, Glenn, George, and Geoff. His eldest son, Garry, predeceased him in 2008. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy and pride to his life. In 1957, George graduated from the University of Maryland's School of Dentistry. Following his graduation, he served as a dentist in the United States Air Force for four years, with assignments in Izmir, Turkey and Andrews Air Force Base. He achieved the rank of Captain and was honorably discharged in 1961. After leaving military service, George established a home dental practice in Bethesda, Maryland. He served his community with dedication and care until his retirement in 1996. He was an avid reader with wide-ranging interests, but reading about religion, philosophy, politics and economics stood out. His personal library consisted of several thousand books, and he enjoyed nothing more than discussing what he was reading with family and friends. He kept detailed personal journals of his thoughts on these topics. George also loved opera and classical music, big family gatherings, children, and storytelling. George was much loved by his family, friends, and patients. His kindness, professionalism, and gentle spirit left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He will be greatly missed. A private memorial service will be held for close family and friends to celebrate George's life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in his memory.
