George L. Edwards took his final breath on Friday, June 13, 2014. He would have been 99 years old on June 25th and often spoke of "making it to 100". He was born in 1915 to the union of the late George Leslie Edwards II and Alma Rivers Edwards in Bamberg, South Carolina. He married his childhood sweetheart, the late Rosa Lee Johnson Edwards, in 1936 and to that union six children were born. He worked in several positions throughout his life; at one time he worked for three different companies at once. His last position was with Potomatic Home Care Services. He lived in Syracuse, New York for most of his life until 2006 when his health began to fail. At the time of his transition, he was living with his oldest daughter in Montclair, California, who along with her children provided care during his illness. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, traveling in his RV and he stated that his goal was to go to every state in the union. He would have his youngest daughter take him to the mountain side, because he loved his spring water. When his brothers were living, he would meet them for breakfast every morning, which turned into a wonderful tradition. His favorite expression was "do everything in moderation". If you ask him on a good day, "George, how are you?" He would say, "I'm almost grown". He was preceded in death by his wives, Rosa Lee, Mary and Dorothy Edwards; a son, David Franks; a grandson, David Franks, Jr; a 6th generation grandbaby, Khalis Montanez; his sisters, Rosabell Dyess, and Lillian Edwards; two brothers, Stanley Edwards and Desport Edwards. He is survived by his children; Frances Smith of Montclair, CA, Eilaine Heard , Georiene (Leon) Crawley, Junelle (Theodis) Starling of Syracuse, NY; Raemelle (Samuel) Edwards of Atlanta, GA, George (Minnie) Mckenzie; step-children; Sabrina Brown, David and Greg Clark, and Juanita Burris; along with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great- great-grandchildren, great-great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of relatives and friends will miss him dearly. Homegoing Services will be held for George on Monday, June 23, 2014 at 12:00 pm at A. Dewitt Memorial Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 4612 S. Salina Street, Syracuse NY 13205. Viewing will be from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, 800 Grant Blvd., Syracuse, NY 13203.
