George Finley
February 5th, 1924 - January 29th, 2009
George L. Finley Mr. Finley, of Charlotte, NC, died at home on January 29, 2010. He was born on February 5, 1924 in Mountville, SC, son of the late Percy and Lou Ella Finley. Mr. Finley, was a member of the ?Greatest Generation.? He served in the US Army Air Corps during and after WWII from 1943-1946 at Burtonwood Airbase in England. It was there he met his loving wife of 62 years, Dorothy (Dot). After the war, Mr. Finley attended Clemson College, were he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1950. Mr. Finley was employed with Duke Power in Charlotte from 1952 until his retirement in 1984. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in NC and SC, and managed the transmission engineering department for many years, where he developed many cherished friendships. Mr. Finley was active in several engineering societies, and served as president of the Charlotte Clemson Club. Post-retirement, he used his many gifts and talents, especially his giving spirit, while volunteering with the Shepherds Center. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, particularly to her home country of England. There, they frequently attended reunions of his former armed services unit at meetings of the Burtonwood Association. Mr. Finley was a member of Park Road Baptist Church, where he served as deacon for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Hance, Weyland, and Jerome, and three sisters, Francis, Eloise, and Teressa. Mr. Finley is survived by his beloved wife, Dot; two sons, David and his wife, Sherry, of Rock Hill, SC, and Keith,of Huntersville NC; one grandson, Jonathan; two granddaughters, Loren and Alexa; and one great-granddaughter, Raley. Additionally, Mr. Finley is survived by two sisters, Thelma Elledge of Greenville, SC, and Rosanne Buchanan of Barnwell, SC. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 PM Tuesday, February 2,2010 at Park Road Baptist Church, with Reverends Russ and Amy Jacks Dean officiating. The family will receive friends in the Narthex immediately following the service. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Park Road Baptist Church, 3900 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28209, or to Harris Hospice and Palliative Care, PO Box 333549, Charlotte, NC, 28233.
