George made his journey into the Promised Land on October 29, 2014, at Cocoa Beach, FL. He was born in Groton, CT March 30, 1930 to Manuel and Mary Rose Fontes. George began his distinguished military career during the Korean war and Viet Nam conflict. During his service in Korea and Viet Nam, he was decorated for bravery and meritorious service. His numerous medals and awards include: two Purple Hearts, Bronze Star, US Presidential Citation, Corps of Engineer medal, Korean War and Vietnam Service medals, United Nations Korean Service medal. During his time in Korea and Viet Nam George was exposed to Agent Orange and developed Parkinson's disease as a result of this exposure. George was involved in many community activities. He held offices with the Banana River Sail and Power Squadron as Commander and District Commander for the Central FL area. He also served on the Cocoa Beach Waterways Advisory Board. George was an ardent golfer and achieved the fame of having 9 hole-in-ones during a five year period. He was an accomplished artist and woodworker, donating many of his works to charity. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Fordham-Fontes, four sons David (Yolanda) Longwood, Fl Mark (Joan) Cary, NC Ronald, Boca Raton, FL and Bruce (Cindy) Acworth, GA. He was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren, Danielle, Keith, Nicole, Stephanie (Stefan)Tucker, Sara, Katherine, Jennifer, Vanessa, and Chelsea Fontes. He was also the proud great-grandfather to Noah and Jace. In addition four step-children, Valerie Wells, Jim Fordham, Thomas Fordham and Lisa Rhinehart. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at Our Savior's Catholic Church, 5301 N. AIA, Cocoa Beach, Tuesday, November 4th, at 10:30 A.M. with reception following. Visitation will be Monday 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home, Cocoa Beach. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the National Parkinson's Foundation, Gift Processing Center, PO Box 5018, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
