"Holyoke - George A. "Bing" LaChapelle Jr., 83, died on August 3, 2019 with his family by his side. Born April 12, 1936 in Holyoke, he was the son of George A. and Margaret (Fitzgerald) LaChapelle. Bing grew up in Holyoke, living in South Hadley for 30 years and briefly in Chicopee before recently returning to Holyoke. He worked as a police officer for the South Hadley Police Dept. and Penn Central eventually transitioning into the freight and passenger divisions of Conrail and Amtrak before retiring. Bing played high school and semi-pro football as a quarterback for 10 years and was invited to try out with the New England Patriots in 1960. He loved golfing at the Ledges and traveling to Europe following retirement. He will be deeply missed by his two daughters, Laura LaChapelle and her husband Thomas Perotti of Chagrin Falls, OH, and Jennifer LaChapelle of Granby, along with his 3 grandchildren, Olivia, Madelyn and Lola and his brother John. Besides his parents, George was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Judith (Gibson) LaChapelle (2017), and his son Jesse LaChapelle (1979) and his brother Dennis. Calling hours will be Friday, August 9th from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. at the Beers & Story South Hadley Funeral Home, 646 Newton St., (Rte 116). A Funeral Mass will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church. PLEASE MEET DIRECTLY AT THE CHURCH. Burial is private.
