George B. Selkirk

George Bruce Selkirk was born in 1917 to Robert and Caroline (Duke) Selkirk in Flagstaff, Ariz., the third of four children. Bruce (in his own words) "shuffled off this mortal coil" Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014. A multi-talented man, he filled his 96 years as a shipyard welder, stage actor and U.S. Navy Lt. JG pilot instructor during World War II. He also worked as a professional photographer, lumber yard owner, children's camp owner and director (Camp Cayucos) and dispatcher for the CHP. He was a licensed building contractor and designer as well as a charter member of the Morro Bay Rotary Club. Bruce was a trustee of the Coast Joint Union, Cayucos Elementary and San Luis Obispo County School boards, and a member of the Cuesta College Site Selection Committee. Bruce married Dorothy Smith in 1949 in Carson City, Nev. She passed away in 1976. The couple had two children, Stuart and Lynne. He then married Shirley (Starr) Page in 1983. They spent most of their time traveling the world and living part time in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico, where they owned a historic 300-year old adobe that Bruce spent many years restoring and expanding. He could never leave anything the way he found it. Bruce is survived by his wife, Shirley; son, Stuart (Laura); daughter, Lynne; stepson, David Page; sister, Margaret Warren; grandchildren Casey Wilcox (Nancy), Clay, Ross and Paige Selkirk; great-grandson, Tristan Wilcox; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Selkirk; sister, Ruth Blanchard; and stepson, Dan Page. Thanks, Dad, for the advice (not that we always followed it) and the entertainment your enthusiasm for life provided all of us.
