In Loving Memory

George Hood Withers, a cherished resident of Walkertown, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2024, at the age of 94. Born on December 25, 1929, in New Albany, Indiana, to Hood and Julia Withers. George made a significant impact on those around him throughout his life.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ms. Laura, brother James Withers, identical twin brother C. Henry Withers, and son-in-law, Steve Morris. George is lovingly remembered by his daughters Barbara Morris of Walkertown, Patricia Goodson and Glenn of Wilmington, Rebecca Lasley and Walter of Walkertown, Leisa Hillenbrand of Orlando, Florida, Julia Landon of Hendersonville, and Lori Norman of Walkertown. George grew up on Cedar Farm in Indiana before moving to Walkertown, where he dedicated himself to his career as a car hauler for Anchor Motor Freight/Leaseway. Known for his adventurous spirit, he never met a road he didn’t like. George enjoyed traveling with Ms. Laura, even visiting all 50 states. He also held a deep love for farming, a passion he maintained long after his retirement.

After retiring, George was a dedicated unofficial employee at Webster Brothers, helping patrons find what they were looking for. He was also a founding member of the Jim Hunt Highway Litter Club, demonstrating his commitment to community service.

George was known for his wisdom and for sharing life lessons and jokes with those around him. His presence and quick wit will be deeply missed by family and friends.

A celebration of George’s life will be held at the Pierce-Jefferson Services Kernersville Chapel on Wednesday, Aug 21st, visitation 10:30a-12p, service to follow.

Pierce-Jefferson Funeral Services Kernersville Chapel

As you journey along West Mountain Street in Kernersville, the stately presence of Pierce-Jefferson Funeral & Cremation Service captures the eye, a facility marked by its elegance and rich history. Originally a modest two-room educational building for the town's children, this structure took on a new life as a funeral home in 1930, and since then, it has been a pillar of dignity and service in the community.

What a wonderful man. I learned so much about tractors and farm equipment from this gregarious man. The hours I spent with him were full of stories about his childhood, his family in Kentucky, Ms Laura, his daughters and last but absolutely not least his grandchildren and great grandson. His friends became my friends as we travelled the back roads of Stokes and Forsyth County. Getting to know such an awesome man has been my honor. Feeling like an extended member of his welcoming family has been a wonderful gift.

George and Clyde were good friends and all of us at the store loved George. I regret I never got to take a trip with George to Cedar Farm. I fondly recall many of George’s stories, jokes and sayings, especially “give her lots of fuel” George once picked up our Ace driver when he got sick on our route, took him to the hospital and returned him to his truck when he was better. George went the extra mile. We are going to miss you dear friend.

George was just fun. I use to knock on his door as I was a kid and ask Laura if George could come out and play. Basketball. The first time I had seen a hook shot. He loved the game. He was good. Big fan of watching it too. We all in Walkertown was lucky when he moved down here. Plus he could water ski. I will miss him for sure. The good ones are leaving us all. I know his family will carry on his good name. I still tell stories about my time with George. What a guy

Our prayers are with you all, George left his mark on the world and in the memories of many. There is nothing I can say that we all don’t already know about a great man that always carried through whatever he was doing, a man of his word that cared for his community and always went the extra mile. He will come up in my memories often….

Some go through life and complain about their in-laws. I try to understand that not everyone can be fortunate enough to have had George and Ms. Laura.
