Gerardo G. Gonzalez
August 25th, 1929 - March 24th, 2017
Gerardo Gonzalez, age 87, of Clewiston, passed away March 24, 2017 peacefully in his home surrounded by family. He was born August 25, 1929 in Cuba to the late Pedro Gonzalez and the late Landelina Hernandez Gonzalez. Gerardo Gonzalez graduated from the University of Havana Cuba as a Doctor of Pharmacy in 1956 where he met his wife Maria, who also graduated with her Doctorate in Pharmacy. Mr. Gonzalez was Vice President of one of the largest pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors in Cuba. In 1961, he fled communist Cuba in search of freedom with his wife, they settled in Clewiston, Florida and began their pursuit of the American Dream. Mr. Gonzalez went to work at United States Sugar Corporation and started a family. In 1971, the family purchased a property on the corner of Highway 27 and Francisco which began as the Cuban Market. Throughout the years the business expanded and Mr. & Mrs. Gonzalez returned to school and once again received their degree in Pharmacy but this time from the University of Florida, and as American Citizens. The Cuban Market was expanded to include Clewiston Drugs. The years prospered and Mr. Gonzalez did indeed achieve his American Dream. Mr. Gonzalez lived a full life enjoying his work, family, friends, golfing, and many weekends at the beach. Survivors include his wife: Maria Esperanza (Muniz) Gonzalez, son: Gerardo Gonzalez, Jr., daughters: Maria Castillo and Silvia Swaford, brother: Godoberto Gonzalez, grandchildren: Ricardo Castillo, III; Robert Eugene Jennings, III; Taylor Jane Swaford; James Philip Swaford; Maria Kandice Swaford and Gabriela Maria Gonzalez. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, March 28, 2017, 10:00 am at Saint Margaret's Catholic Church, Clewiston. with Father Jiobani Batista officiating.Interrment followe in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Clewiston. Arrangements by Akin-Davis Funeral Home - Clewiston.
