Gian Kaur Bains
January 23rd, 1928 - December 8th, 2018
Gian Kaur Bains, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home in Yuba City, CA, on December 8, 2018, at the age of 90. She was born January 23, 1928, in the village of Piplanwala, Hoshiarpur, India. She was a very young child when her mother passed away, leaving her father and Aunt Parro to raise her and her brothers. Gian Kaur would later be married at a young age to her late husband, Bakhtawar S. Bains. The couple's dream of coming to America was realized when they landed in San Francisco in December 1949. Upon their arrival, they were greeted by their Uncle, Geno Bains, who taught them about American customs and culture and brought them to the Yuba City area which became their home for the rest of their lives. Gian Kaur embraced the American culture while holding her Punjabi identity close to her heart. The young couple was blessed with five children whom she loved very much. With hard work and perseverance she raised their family and helped build the family farming business. As an early Punjabi settler in the Yuba City area, Gian Kaur built a network of countless family and friends. She and her husband were part of the original group of Punjabi American couples to settle in the Yuba City area. Gian Kaur will always be remembered for her contagious warm smile, loving hugs, generosity, sweet nature, hospitality and delicious cooking. She was dedicated to her roles as daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend to many. She enjoyed attending events, gatherings, celebrations and prayers at the temple. She was our family's "social butterfly." She was the happiest amongst her family and friends. Gian Kaur will be greatly missed by all of us who were fortunate to know and love her. Gian Kaur is survived by her son, Ajab Bains (Lata); daughter, Chinty Bains; sons, Balbir Bains (Kelvinder); Jaswinder Bains (Gurinderpal); and Avtar Bains (Balvinder); seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers; and her husband, Bakhtawar S. Bains. Prayer services will be held at Ullrey Memorial Chapel, Yuba City, at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, December 14, 2018. Additional prayer services will follow at Tierra Buena Sikh Temple.
