Gladys J. Meola

Gladys J. Meola, age 82, of Mayfield, died Monday afternoon, November 19, 2018. She was born February 15, 1936 in New York City, the daughter of the late Spring and Jean Davidow Hunter. She was a graduate of Union College School of Nursing and was later employed as a Registered Nurse by Albany Medical Center, Guilderland Center Nursing Home and Hallmark Center. Known as the family nurse, she was always the one to be called for any medical advice. She always had the answer. Gladys was an avid quilter and made many amazing quilts for her family's special occasions. In addition, she loved painting, knitting, crocheting, other crafts and bocce ball. She loved her family as well as her home on the Great Sacandaga Lake. She was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit, the New York State Capitolers and the Nathan Littauer Auxiliary. She served as a Fulton County Election Inspector. She volunteered for the American Red Cross Blood Mobile. Gladys is survived by three children, Nicki Pine (Lance) John Meola (Shari) and Mark Meola; two brothers, Kenneth Hunter and Eugene Hunter; seven grandchildren, Evan Pine, Andrew Pine, Nicholas Meola, Gianna Meola, Alyssa Pine, Courtney Meola and Shawn Meola; three great-grandchildren, Lilli Avery Pine, Madeleine Pine and Michael Pine; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, John M. Meola; a daughter, Nancy Purchase; and siblings Barbara Dowis, Matthew Hunter and George Hunter. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, November 26 at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St, Gloversville, where a Prayer Service will be held 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, followed at 10:00 a.m. by a Mass of Christian Burial at The Church of the Holy Spirit, 151 S. Main St; Gloversville, with the Rev. Matthew Wetsel officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to St. Jude's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 3704, Memphis, TN 38103.
