Glennis Irene Curry
November 11th, 1941 - October 23rd, 2020
Glennis Irene Dyer was born on November 11, 1940 in Salem, Oregon to Harold Ambrose and Alice Marie Dyer. She was the second child of the family and the only daughter of five. So with four brothers: Gary, Harold, Ron and Jerry, she grew up strong and resilient, but spunky and spirited. She attended Turner Elementary, Leslie Middle School and South Salem High. She participated in the school choir and many other school clubs and associations. She had many friends and was loved by many who described her in her school yearbook as a sweet, nice and funny girl. Others described her as “a swell girl” with a good sense of humour. She graduated South Salem High in 1959. She worked from a young age; picking berries, babysitting or canning in factories in the Willamette Valley to save up enough money to attend one year at Western Oregon University. When she couldn’t afford to continue, she left her general studies and got straight to work for the Oregon Department of State Lands. She moved up fast and was very well-regarded in the probate department. When she decided to leave to become a full-time mother of three, her colleagues were shocked and they begged her to stay. Back in 1962 during an ice cream social at the local Baptist church, she met her husband Leland Dean Curry. They would often go out on dates for pie and ice cream or for drives around in his 1954 Chevy. On Valentine’s day in 1963, he popped the question and she agreed. They eloped in Reno, Nevada that same year. Before having kids, they spent a lot of time in the outdoors and going on drives in the countryside looking for property to settle down on. Eventually, on one of those drives they found and bought a piece of land near Turner, on which they would later build their family home and raise their three daughters. Glennis was a fun-loving girl, a hard-working professional and a dedicated wife, but above all she was a loving mother. She had three girls: Lisa Marie, Karen Anne and Christina Marie. She enjoyed running them around town to ballet, piano, swimming, gymnastics and roller skating classes. When she wasn’t working to grow the family rental business or driving her daughters to sports competitions or ballet rehearsals, you could find her shopping, travelling around the world, eating out or just socialising in her living room with a cup of coffee. Having four brothers made being a mother of three daughters even the more rewarding. It filled her heart with joy to see them grow and blossom into the women they are today. She was diagnosed with metastasized breast cancer in 2006 and fought long and hard to enjoy every day with her family. Through it all she stayed positive and upbeat, never complaining and never saying no to any possible treatment. Eventually, the cancer won, but she will always be considered a fighter and survivor to her family and everyone who knew her. She passed away October 23 at home with her husband and daughter Christina by her side. She will be greatly missed by her husband Leland, her three daughters: Lisa, Karen and CC and her four grandchildren: Oliver Sanchez Curry, Clara Sanchez Curry, Sunny Dowden Curry and Ocean Dowden Curry, and last but not least her two sons-in-law: Pedro Luis Sanchez and Danny Dowden. A private service was held October 28 in Crown Memorial Center. Condolences can be sent to [email protected] and in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation. .
