Gregory Lawrence Gray was born as the second son of eight children, seven boys in a row, and a girl at the end of the line of Richard and Virginia Gray at St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise on July 28th, 1949.

He attended St. Joseph’s and Bishop Kelly High School in Boise.  He spent two years at the University of Notre Dame, as he couldn’t stand the weather, and subsequently graduated from Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.  He received two doctorates in microbiology at UCLA and the University of Colorado.

Greg was a research microbiologist for Genentech in South San Francisco assisting in the development and documentation of their successful engineered product, human growth hormone, then worked as a researcher at Genencor, their subsidiary specializing in engineered enzyme development.  Also, Greg worked for a number of years for Clorox in Pleasanton, California in enzyme research.

He returned to Boise in his later years and worked both full and part time operating a laboratory for a medical practice.

Greg was passionate about metal machining and was a self-taught machinist producing intricate model steam locomotives.  He also spent much of his spare time hiking and camping in the Idaho outdoors.

He devoted his last few years, almost full-time, taking care of his mother in her declining years.

Greg passed away on April, 27th from complications associated with pulmonary fibrosis, an auto immune lung disease.

His funeral will be held on Saturday, May 4th at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in south Boise at 12 noon, followed by interment at Morris Hill Cemetery.

He is preceded in death by his brother Mark and survived by his remaining six siblings, John, Tim, Richard, Steve, David and Ginny and an extended family.
