Harold Y. Wolfson

Harold Y. Wolfson, 89, of St. Pete Beach, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2014. Born and raised in Omaha, NE., he was a grocer before moving here in 1959 to go into the home-building industry. He was married to his wife, Gertrude for 49 years until she passed away in 1995. From 1963 until 1988, the couple owned and operated Harold's Market at 12th Street and 12th Avenue South in St. Petersburg. Although retired from the grocery business, he continued to volunteer as production manager of the Jewish Press. He was a World War II veteran, serving at the Battle at Remagen Bridge. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. A longtime Tampa Bay Buccaneers season ticketholder, he was to be honored for his military service as the Bucs' "Hero of the Game" on Dec. 28. He was a member of Congregation B'nai Israel in St. Petersburg for more than 50 years. Among his many interests, he was a league bowler up until recently and played in a weekly poker game. He was a remote-control airplane enthusiast and was a founding member of the SPARKS RC Club and the Largo Flying Club. Survivors include his companion, Leatrice Tucker; his children and their spouses, Steve and Penny Wolfson, of Regina, Saskatchewan; Karen and Jim Dawkins of Largo; Mark and Julia Wolfson of Treasure Island; and Ellen and Manny Valladares of Weston; sisters, Bette Schroeder of St. Petersburg and Lorraine Denenberg of Mountain View, CA; 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews including Sam and Julie Wolfson of Littleton, CO; Andrea Wolfson of Washington, DC, Sacha Wolfson, Falene and Mike Raina, Tim and Abbey Martin, Jocelyn Martin and Nathan, all of Regina and Chandra Morton of Quebec; Rachel Dawkins of St. Petersburg, Jeremy and Jenny Dawkins of Orlando, Aaron and Nicole Wolfson of Seminole, Jonathan Wolfson of Tampa; Gabriel Valladares and Michael Valladares, both of Weston; Graveside services will be 1 PM Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Chapel Hill Memorial Park, 12905 Wild Acres Road, Largo. Donations in his memory would be appreciated to Congregation B'nai Israel of St. Petersburg. David C. Gross Funeral Homes, Central Avenue Chapel in St. Petersburg is serving the family.
