Harry Elmer Bower
August 2nd, 1936 - June 8th, 2016
Beloved husband, father, and grandfather Harry Elmer Bower passed away on Wednesday morning, June eighth, with family at his bedside. He was seventy-nine. ,Known amongst family and friends as a true and kind Christian, Harry was born in Glendale, California, on August 2, 1936. He grew up in Los Angeles, graduating from George Washington High School, and enjoyed playing the baritone horn with the LAPD Auxiliary Band, performing in the Rose Parade in the 1950s. As an adult, he developed a lifelong career in mechanical engineering, starting as an architectural draftsman in Los Angeles, which took him to Campbell, California, and then to Edmonds, Washington, with Ervin Engineers. In 1975 he co-founded Halvorson, Beach and Bower, an HVAC engineering consulting firm, and was active in trade associations such as the Council of Educational Facility Planners International and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-conditioning Engineers until his retirement in 1999. ,Harry most enjoyed spending time with his wife Barbara, his five children and seven grandchildren. Described by many as the embodiment of a devout true Christian, Harry strived to teach his children personal responsibility and a nonjudgmental outlook on life, and held numerous volunteer positions at St. Matthew and Trinity Lutheran churches. He was also deeply involved in Neighbors in Need, a church affiliated organization that provides basic services for those most in need. ,Harrys love of music continued throughout his life, especially classical and opera, particularly Bach and Mendelssohn, and his favorite hymn was How Great Thou Art, which he enjoyed playing on the pipe organ in his previous Edmonds home. Harry was perpetually interested in learning new things and the outdoors, and enjoyed camping, hiking, walking, reading, travel, cooking, and dancing with Barbara. His favorite places to travel were Hawaii, Costa Rica, Sun River, Palm Springs, and to visit his children.Harry was preceded in death by his parents Charles Earl Bower and Rosalie Mary Parish, first wife Cornelia DuPee Bower, and his brother Richard Edward Bower. He is survived by Barbara Graham Bower, his wife of forty years, his children and their families: Donald, Tina, Tyler, and Kelsey Graham of Snohomish, Washington; Martin, Alexandra, and Anderson Bower of Beverly Hills, California; Gregory, Kathryn, and Nicole Garski of Salem, Oregon; James and Gigi Bower Comer and Rachael Bower of Thompson Falls, Montana; Timothy, Cornelia, Andrew and Riley McGinnis of Sandpoint, Idaho; and his sister-in-law Anita Bower. ,At the deceaseds request, there will be a private memorial at graveside.
