Harvey Bert Steinberg

Harvey Steinberg passed away February 21, 2013 at his daughter's home. Harvey was born October 3, 1930 in Philadelphia, PA. As a young teen he moved, with his sister Eileen "Leasha" to Washington D.C., where they lived with their Aunt and Uncle. At age 14 Harvey dropped out of school. Then at 16, he became a Marine. Harvey was a Marine Sargent. He fought in the Korean War. In the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir he suffered multiple combat wounds and was honorably discharged. For his service he was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, Purple Heart, China Service, Korean Service, and Good Conduct medals. After the war, Harvey completed his high school education. He continued with college and law school at George Washington University and was admitted to the bar in 1958. He worked with the Secret Service in the evenings and worked on building a new law practice during the day. In the 1960s Harvey joined a law firm with James Miller, William Miller, and Arthur Brisker. The Steinberg and Miller families became fast friends, partners, and confidants and Harvey was affectionately referred to as the forth Miller brother. In the early 80s William Miller became a judge on the Circuit Court and a young Kevin Hessler joined the firm; Miller, Steinberg, & Hessler. Harvey was a well-respected divorce attorney in Montgomery County Maryland and was featured in the Washingtonian magazine twice as one of the "Best Divorce Lawyers" and "Divorce Lawyers who win." He had a wicked sense of humor and was always a big hit with the annual bar review as "Smirnoff the Great." Harvey retired in 2002 and began meeting his granddaughters at the school bus each afternoon. He loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren deeply. He would eat dinner with his daughter and family five days a week. Harvey took great pleasure in reading with the grandkids, listening to children/grandchildren playing the piano and flute, chaperoning school field trips, and chauffeuring his grandchildren to various activities. Whether you knew him as Harvey, Dad, Foo, Cran, Grandpa, or Papa Steinberg he had a positive effect on whoever he embraced. We miss him very much. He will be forever in our hearts. Harvey will be laid to rest next to his beloved son David Darrin Steinberg in Arlington National Cemetary. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Joseph Elliott Steinberg, William Robert Hogan, Charles Adam Steinberg, Pamela Lynn Mayer and his son-in-law Craig Edwin Mayer, who he loved as one of his own. His Grandchildren, Anna Harrelson Jones, Garrett William Hogan, Amanda Margaret Mayer, Samantha Grace Hogan, Rachel Elizabeth Mayer and his great grandchildren Vincent Omar Hogan and Violet Sunshine Hogan.
