Hazel Smith Vickery
June 26th, 1921 - March 23rd, 2015
Mrs. Vickery, 93, of Charlotte, NC departed this life to be with her Lord on Monday, March 23, 2015. Hazel was born on June 26, 1921 in Concord, NC to the late John L. and Maggie Cline Smith. She graduated Concord High School and married Burch (Burt) Bryant Vickery, Jr. shortly before World War II. They moved to Wilmington, NC for Burt to join the war effort, returning to live in Charlotte after the end of the war. They moved to the Carmel Road area in 1956 where she resided for the rest of her days. After joining Carmel Country Club, Mrs. Vickery took up bridge and golf, becoming accomplished at both. She enjoyed her bridge and golfing friends for as long as they lived, successfully participating in many tournaments. Hazel raised three sons and was a very supportive and loving mother. Her devotion to family during the holidays led to their labeling her annual trip to The Master's tournament as "Hazel's Christmas". In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and her youngest son, Mark Steven. Mrs. Vickery is survived by her remaining two sons, Burch Bryant III and wife, Kendall, and Michael David and wife, Dianne; four grandchildren, KG Vickery, Burch Bryant IV, Brooks Stewart, and Courtney Thomas; and five great-grandchildren. A service to celebrate her life will be held at the graveside in Sharon Memorial Park at 2:00 PM, Friday, March 27, 2015.
