Mr. Hazlett J. Quackenbush, Jr. 94, of Amsterdam, passed away on Wednesday May 27, 2015 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam with his loving family at his side. He was born on November 20, 1920 in Rensselaer, NY the son of the late Hazlett J. and Catherine Campbell Quackenbush, Sr. He was a graduate of Fultonville High School and Lettered in High School Basketball. Hazlett was a decorated World War II Veteran serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was assigned to fly in the B-24 Liberator with the 5th Air Force, 43rd Bomb group, 64th Squadron also known as "Benny's" Boys. He went to Port Moresby in New Guinea on June 9, 1943. He flew in 51 missions that included Bismarck, Archipelago, New Guinea and Northern Solomons Campaigns. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and and received Three Bronze Stars for his actions during combat. He was employed for over 35 years at the former A & P Market in Amsterdam where he worked as a Clerk he was a member of the Local Meat Packer Union. Mr. Quackenbush was a member of the American Legion John J. Wyszomirski Post #701 in Amsterdam and was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam. Hazlett is survived by his loving wife, Margaret G. Hyatt Quackenbush of Amsterdam whom he married on Feb 16, 1947. Survivors also include his children, Katherine Quackenbush (Michael) Blair of Ft. Johnson, NY., Lawrence J.(Chuck Hansen) Quackenbush of Albany, NY, Martin A. (Linda) Quackenbush of Niskayuna, NY , Patricia M.(Debra Boone) Quackenbush of Virginia , Roberta L. (Walter) Trench of Broadalbin, NY, Robert J. Quackenbush of Amsterdam and William E. Quackenbush of Amsterdam. Cherished grandchildren, Rebecca, Joseph, Katie, James, Kayla, Lauren, Jennie, Jared Nicole, Christina, Melissa, Martin, Sean, Stephen & Tiffany. Fourteen great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was predeceased by his son Daniel P. Quackenbush who passed away in April of 2014. The family will receive relatives and friends from 5:00PM to 7:00PM on Monday June 1, 2015 at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam where a Funeral Service will follow at 7:00. Fr. O. Robert DeMartinis officiating. Post 701 American Legion will conduct a prayer service at 6:00 pm Monday at the funeral home. Interment with full military honors will be in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.
