Helen D. Jones, 93, Oneida Turtle Clan, of the Onondaga Nation passed away on Wednesday, September 18th, with family by her side. She was born in Syracuse to William Powless and Elizabeth Thomas in 1931. Helen retired from SUNY Upstate after many years of service. She was a member of the Oneida Nation Elders Program. Helen was an avid sports fan with a special love for lacrosse and a tried and true Yankees fan, but her true love was watching her grandchildren play their various sports. Helen was affectionately known by many as “Grandma Helen.” Her spirit and affectionate smile will be missed by all who knew and loved her. 

She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Nelson Jones, Sr.; sisters, Sarah Stout and Rosella Peters; brothers, Richard Powless, Maynard “Dip” Gabriel and Lawrence “Larry” Gabriel and grandson, Bradley Jones.

Helen is survived by her daughters Colleen, Regina and Blanche Jones; sons Nelson, Jr. (Darlene) and Matthew (Vicky) Jones; 12 grandchildren; 26 great- grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Family and friends may call at their convenience after 2PM on Thursday, September 19th, at her home and Friday, September 20th at their convenience.

Funeral service will be 10AM at her home and 11AM at the Longhouse on Saturday, September 21st.

Burial will follow in the Onondaga Nation Cemetery.
