Henry Stokes

Henry James Stokes Mr. Stokes, 88, of Charlotte died peacefully Monday, May 10, 2010, surrounded by his family at Mecklenburg Healthcare Center after a long illness. He was born June 7, 1921, in Lee County, SC son of the late James D. and Rachel Deas Stokes. Henry was a graduate of Old Harding High School class of 1941, where he was a three year letterman in football and baseball. Mr. Stokes was a US Navy veteran of WW II. An avid golfer, Mr. Stokes was a long time member of Carolina Golf and Country Club. He was the owner of City Tire Company in Dilworth for over 30 years before he retired. In addition to his parents Mr. Stokes was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Vivian Stokes; daughter, Sylvia Coxwell; brothers, Arthur and Noah Stokes; sisters, Alma Stokes and Addie LaJohn. Surviving are his daughters, Shirley Shaw Mullis and Sandra Lane; son, Christopher Stokes; sister, Corrie Presslar; three granddaughters, Suzette Coxwell, April Lane and McKenna Haywood; two grandsons, Adam Lane and Coleman Stokes and his great-grandson, Aiden Lane. Funeral service for Mr. Stokes will be held 2:00 PM Friday, May 14, 2010 in the Dilworth Chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. The family would like to thank the Doctors and staff of Mecklenburg Healthcare and Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region for all the loving care they provided Mr. Stokes.
