Dr. Herbert L. Benson, 81, formerly of Houston, Texas, Breckenridge, Colorado, and Georgetown, Texas, died on April 16, 2016, at home in Fairfax, Virginia. Mr. Benson was a senior research chemist for Shell Oil Company in Houston, Texas before retiring. Mr. Benson had lived in Virginia for the past five years. Born April 26, 1934, the son of Herbert and Agnes (Danielson) Benson in Kansas City, Missouri, he graduated from Bethany College in Kansas and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Dorothy (Carlson) Benson of Fairfax; daughters Mary Stahlke of Forest Park, Illinois and Anne Miller of Annandale, a son, Mark Benson of Fairplay, Colorado, eleven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald L. Benson. A Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., April 23, at Advent Funeral Home, 7211 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA, followed by a Burial Service at 12 noon at Pleasant Valley Memorial Park, 8420 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, VA. A Memorial Service and Reception will be held at 1:00 p.m., April 24, at Luther Place Memorial Church, Washington, D.C., 1226 Vermont Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20005. Complimentary parking is available at Washington Plaza Hotel (across the street from the church on Vermont Ave.) Memorial donations may be made to Luther Place Memorial Church, Washington, D.C.; Bethany College, 335 East Swensson Street, Lindsborg, Kansas 67456; and N Street Village, 1333 N Street, NW, Washington, DC 20005.
