Herbert Hoover Smith
July 4th, 1927 - April 15th, 2013
Herbert Hoover Smith, 85, of Kingsport, TN, passed away April 15, 2013 at Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born July 4, 1927 in Wise County, Virginia to Robert Wood Smith and wife, Edith Moore Smith. He was a wonderful, loving husband, a beloved father and grandfather. Herbert made Kingsport his home for the last 60 years. He served his country in the United States Navy as a veteran of World War II aboard the USS E. G. Small, and the Korean War aboard the USS Wasp. He retired from Holston Auto Supply Company as Vice-president and Sales Manager. He was a past member of the Kingsport Optimist Club. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Edith; a daughter, Melissa Smith Larkins; a brother, Kerwin Smith; and an infant sister, Dorothy Smith. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Arlis Farmer Smith of Kingsport; a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Tony Gardner of Colonial Heights; a son and daughter-in-law, Woody and Teresa Smith of Greeneville; 2 special grandchildren,Jessica Smith of Johnson City and Kevin Smith of Greeneville; a step-grandson, Davey Fellers, and wife Jamie Fellers of Baileyton; a step-granddaughter, Lori Barkley, and husband Greg Barkley of Jonesborough; and three step-great-grandchildren, Hayden Fellers, Emma Barkley, and Benjamin Barkley. He leaves several sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, nieces and nephews. Private family graveside services will be held 3:00 pm Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at Oak Hill Memorial Park, Kingsport with Rev. David Woody officiating. Music will be provided by Lori Barkley and Kevin Smith. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 3/265. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, National MS Society, Greater New England Chapter, P.O. Box 845945, Boston, MA 02284-5945 or the American Heart Association, P.O.Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.cartertrent.com.
