Homer M. Savige, 87, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014 at the Life Path Hospice House of Ruskin, Florida. Homer was born in 1926 to Jennie (Miller) and Charles Savige in Grove City, PA. He was the fifth of seven children. He served in the United States Army from Jan. 25, 1945 to March 9, 1946. He earned both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree from Penn State University and a PhD. in Music Education from Florida State University, where he met the love of his life, Ann Barnes. Six months later, they were wed and were happily married for 57 years. Homer had a long and distinguished career in the field of music education and performance, and was an accomplished trombonist and pianist. He was the Choral Director at Clearwater High School in Clearwater, FL, Assistant Professor and Choir Director at Erskine College in Dew West, SC, Professor and Head of the Department of Music at Berry College in Mount Berry, GA, and Professor of Music and Chairman of Fine Arts at Mercer University in Atlanta, GA. Homer was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who treasured family above all else. He enjoyed arranging music, exploring computers and electronics, golfing, and solving crossword puzzles in record time. Homer is survived by his wife, Ann; son, David; daughter, Marian; grandchild, Sylvie Ann Shrum; daughter-in-law, Christine Gustafson; son-in-law, Glenn Shrum; sisters, Lois (Savige) Woolbaugh, Priscilla (Savige) Keels, and many nieces and nephews. Homer was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Anna (Savige) Hanas, and Grace (Savige) Zielsdorff, and his brothers Charles and John. A graveside service will be held this summer at Willow View Cemetery in Clifford, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Life Path Hospice House, 3723 Upper Creek Drive, Ruskin, FL 33573.
