In Loving Memory

Horace Paul Gilgo (known to most as Paul, other than his sisters who called him Horace) died in his home on September 21, 2024 at the age of 92.

He was one of eleven children born to William Thomas and Lucy Beachem Gilgo. He lived briefly on Portsmouth Island, NC and then moved to Oriental, NC where some family members, including his surviving brother Jack (Betty) remain today.  Paul was a gifted man in many ways.  He was a part of a championship basketball team at Oriental High School.  He went on to join the US Navy serving during the Korean War.  He attended NC State University and Gaston Technical Community College leading to a long and accomplished career as a mechanical engineer with Hanes Corporation.

Paul and Faye Hayes Gilgo were married on April 4, 1959 in Raleigh, NC.  Paul and Faye were married for 58+ years before her death in February 2018. They had two children, Vickey and Paul.  Paul (Gila) died in December 2004, leaving us heartbroken.

Paul was a man of intense faith and was devoted to his family and his community.  He was a member of the Walkertown Lions Club, serving his local, district and state organization.  He was a member of the Forsyth Masonic Lodge #707, serving in many capacities at a local, district and state level.  He served his family, friends, neighbors and strangers with his knowledge, handiwork, skill and much more.  He would also tell you he knew everything, the best way was his way and he could fix anything.  He was not far from wrong despite it drove us all a bit crazy.

Despite being diagnosed with interstitial lung disease over 4 years ago he remained strong, independent and more positive than anyone we’ve known.  Which is likely why he outlived his doctors’ projections by more than 3 years.  His faith in God also fueled his positive attitude and he was able to share that faith with many who surrounded him throughout the years.

He is survived by his daughter Vickey and husband Ron (his other son); grandson Nick, wife Kim and great grandchildren Heidi and Tucker; daughter-in-law Kelly and her husband Michael and grandchildren Drew, Grace and Evan.  He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins whom he adored.

Paul’s family wishes to thank everyone who supported him during these past 2 years-the homecare team from Always Best Care, Trellis Supportive Care, his neighbors and friends.  He could not have remained in his home without all of you.

To honor Paul’s wonderful life, you may make a donation to Trellis Supportive Care, The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford or Friends of Portsmouth Island.

A celebration of Paul’s life will be held at Pine Grove Methodist Church at 1018 Piney Grove Road, Kernersville on Thursday, October 3 at 12 noon.

I grew up going to Uncle Paul and Aunt Faye's a lot! I remember playing it their yard a whole lot! I will miss him calling me "shug"! He always said, "You need to eat, if you want to be big and strong like me!" I love you Uncle Paul!
