Hubert McLendon
January 16th, 1925 - September 18th, 2009
Hubert Jackson McLendon, Sr. Mr. McLendon, 84, of Charlotte died unexpectedly at his residence on Friday, September 18, 2009. A Charlotte native he was born January 16, 1925, son of the late William Joshua McLendon and Dora Thomas Burton. Mr. McLendon attended the city schools and left during his senior year at Newell High School to join the US Navy Air Corps where he served for three and a half years during WWII. Upon returning home, Mr. McLendon entered the world of entertainment, serving in many capacities. He retired in 1997 as Manager of Independence Arena and Ovens Auditorium. He loved the Charlotte Symphony and served as Tour Manager on their European tour. He was a Shriner and 32nd degree Mason and a lifetime member of Local #322, I.A.T.S.E. In his long career he met many famous people and considered it an honor. Mr. McLendon is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Shelton Basinger McLendon, four children, Lucinda McLendon Jones and her husband, Johnny of Simpsonville, SC, Dr. Martha Shelton McLendon Hisley and her husband, Dr. John Hisley of Southport, NC, Hubert Jackson McLendon, Jr. of Charlotte, NC and James William McLendon and his wife, Maria of Durham, NC. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Laurel Jones Varney of Simpsonville, SC and great-granddaughter Savannah McLendon Varney also of Simpsonville, SC. The family will receive friends at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service Sunday afternoon September 20, 2009, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. A service to celebrate his life will be held Monday September 21, 2009 at 11:00 AM at St. Mark?s Lutheran Church where he was a member for 49 years. Interment will follow the service in Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to St. Mark?s Lutheran Church, 1900 Queens Rd., Charlotte, NC 28207, The Charlotte Symphony, 1300 Baxter St., Charlotte, NC 28204 or the Humane Society, 2700 Toomey Ave., Charlotte, NC 28203.
