Hubert Ordway Starnes
June 9th, 1949 - December 17th, 2015
Hubert "Bill" Ordway Starnes, Jr., 66, courageously passed on to heaven early morning on December 17, 2015. "Ride'em to the skies cowboy!" Bill was born June 9, 1949, to the late Margaret Costner and H.O. Starnes, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Lydia Sue Collins; and grandson, J.D. Love. Bill was known, by those most close, to be a generous, kind, fun-loving, forgiving spirit. He had a deep belief in Christ our Lord, and he prayed daily. As a former small business owner of Starnes Mower Repair Company, a subsidiary of Starnes Mower & Marine Sales and Service, Inc., Bill strived to navigate his life calmly while focusing on balanced, service-driven outcomes. Family depended on Bill's wisdom and guidance daily while he led quietly and meekly allowed others to take credit. His love of entertainment was far reaching and included comedic cinema, westerns, and drama, to name a few. As a young tike, he heavily participated in sports and was an enthusiast all his life, following football, racing, golf, wrestling, hunting, and boxing, "The Fights" he called them. Those left to treasure Bill's memory are daughters, Lydia Kay Beach and Tabitha Nicole Starnes, both of Charlotte; grandchildren, Ryan, Christian, Brandon and Lexi; special niece, Malina; grandnephews, Cody and Austin; and younger sister and "Besty," Jennifer Starnes or "Sassie" to Bill. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM, Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Hankins & Whittington, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC. The visitation will begin at 12:00 PM, one hour prior to the service. Following the service, Bill will be laid to rest at Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte, with his beloved parents and other family members. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, in memory of Bill, may be made to The Heritage Foundation online at https://secured.heritage.org/donate/. "Courage is being scared to death - and saddling up anyway." John Wayne

At Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, nestled in the historic heart of Dilworth, we have provided families in the Charlotte area with customizable memorial services for many years. Our services are crafted to honor your loved ones in ways that are both deeply meaningful and healing. Our rich history began in 1946 when Irvin W. Hankins and James B. Whittington took the reins of the Crouch Funeral Home. The growth of our service and the community's support led to our move in March 1963 to the current location—once St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, built in 1930. Our chapel, a cherished historic landmark within the storied Dilworth neighborhood, is renowned for being the only funeral home in Charlotte graced with its own chapel, echoing with decades of history and serenity....
