Hubert Stevens Whitlock
May 19th, 1919 - February 19th, 2014
Mr. Whitlock, 94, of Charlotte, died Wednesday February 19, 2014. Visitation for Mr. Whitlock will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 3:30 at J. B. Tallent Funeral Home. The family will gather for a graveside funeral at Sardis Presbyterian Church. Mr. Whitlock was born in Blythewood, South Carolina on May 19, 1919, and grew up in small towns in the Carolinas and Virginia as the son of a railroad agent and telegrapher. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, he heeded the call the day after Christmas in 1941 and joined in the defense of his homeland. In the course of his long training, he excelled as a bombardier and was assigned to a B-24 crew destined to fly bombing missions over Europe. During this period of his life, he survived thirty combat missions. After the war he was able to refocus his attention on his childhood dream of designing and building homes. After a stint at Harvard School of Design he gained ten years of experience doing design work for a contractor in Houston, Texas, before moving to Charlotte, where he eventually founded his own building company in 1957. Mr. Whitlock was a long time member of Sardis Presbyterian Church. Mr. Whitlock is survived by his sister Mary Lukianoff of Johnson City, Tennessee; his four children Stephanie Hazard (Donald), Sheila Eichert (Stephan), Steven Whitlock (Joy), and Scott Whitlock (Allison); his fifteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and his nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his devoted wife of 65 years, Irene Kirby Whitlock, his parents, Francis Marvin and May Lily Stevens Whitlock, his brothers, Frank, William, Harold, and Don and his granddaughter Sabrina Simmons. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Aba Biney for her loving care for Mr. Whitlock.
