Iona B. Billington

Mrs. Iona B. Billington , 91 , of Amsterdam , passed away Thursday April 26, 2018 at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam with her loving family at her side. Born in Amsterdam, NY on December 1, 1926, a daughter of the late David and Beatrice Barrard Ross. She was a lifelong area resident and attended Amsterdam High School. Iona worked as a seamstress for many years at the former Mohawk Sportswear Co. in Amsterdam. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Amsterdam. Mrs. Billington was devoted to her husband, children and family. She enjoyed baking, especially for family parties and occasions. She also enjoyed working around her home and taking drives with her husband and was an avid reader. She married Thomas E. Billington on June 30, 1946. He passed away on November 15, 1995. Survivors include her loving children, Thomas James (Laurie) Billington of Amsterdam, Joan Francisco of Amsterdam, Marie (David) DeForest of Amsterdam, Kathleen (David) Bonanno of Amsterdam and Deborah (Leonard) LaPorte of Florida. One brother, Robert (Margaret) Ross of Bath, NY and a sister, Marie Belfance of Amsterdam. Sixteen grandchildren, Lorie, Vernon Jr., Timothy, Brenda, Kim, Jeff, Stephanie, Stacie, Kevin, Kelly, Brianne, Brian, Matthew, Thomas, Kristal and Colleen. Thirty six great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Iona was predeceased by her brothers and sisters, David Ross, Fred Ross, Evelyn Sadowski, Catherine LaTour and Thomas Ross. The Immediate family is invited to a calling period from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Historic St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church: Blessed Sacrament Chapel on Monday April 30, 2018. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Monday at 11:15AM in the church with Father Jeffrey M. L’Arche as celebrant. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Sand Flats, Fonda, NY. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to a Charity of One’s Choice.
