IULAI (ALU) VAVAO
It is with heavy heart the family of Iulai Vavao announces his sudden death on Friday, July 5, 2024 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was 76 years of age.
Born on July 11, 1947 in Leone, American Samoa and retired as an IBEW Electrician in San Francisco after 22 yrs of service.
Preceded by his sisters, Tafia Taimalelagi, Leka Yoder, his brothers, Joe Hunkin, Frank Hunkin and Pouma’a Vavao. Surviving sister, Tolu Tarrant.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart and marriage of 57 years, Mildred “Millie”; his daughter Angelique (Ashlee) of Buckeye, Arizona, and his sons, James (Joli) of Newark, California , Nathaniel of Newnan, Georgia, and Mathias (Mary) of Newark, California. His posterity includes 12 grandchildren.
Baptized in Samoa as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Iulai and Millie were sealed together at the Oakland Temple in Oakland, California on April 1994.Moving from the islands in 1964, he reunited with his mom and sisters in San Francisco. As a Senior at Wilson High School, he met his wife in Feb 1965, married in August 1967, in which their relationship was inseparable. Starting a family at a young age, he never stopped working until his retirement in April 2004. His favorite pastime was music and all sports. An avid Bay Area fan of the Warriors, Oakland A’s and especially the San Francisco 49’er’s.
He’ll surely be missed by so many who has surrounded him with love and friendship in his life. Rest gently in peace and love Pops, we’ll takeover to care for Mom, until we meet again ❤️
