Jack Martin Coryell
June 17th, 1926 - January 14th, 2015
Our father, Jack Coryell, Sr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 14th, in Tigard, Oregon. He was a good father, steady in beliefs, reliable and so very proud of his children. Jack Sr. was born June 17, 1926, during hard times in Logging Camp 8, Carson, Washington. The entire extended family was working together at Camp 8, where his parents Jon C. and Mabel Coryell met and married. Jack’s family moved to follow work, always staying together and watching out for each other. We believe this is where he developed his strong sense of family. After moving to San Francisco, he found work in the shipyards, supporting his mother and sister. At the shipyard he met pretty Alice Chavez and they married January 14, 1945, moving to Tigard, Oregon, and raising six children. He and Alice built a large home in Metzger that was always open to friends and family. Jack Sr. was a journeyman sheet metal worker with union Local #16 and worked for the Portland School District until retirement. His hobbies were varied – bowling on a league, fishing, former PTA president, active in Y-Indian Guides with his son and archery. He managed a troop of performers called Los Banditos who marched in parades and performed gun-fights in street parades. Mr. Coryell is survived by son Jack Coryell, Jr., Jill Bickell (Steve), Janet Coryell (Ed Gill), Jeffrey Coryell (Meg), Julie Coryell (Larry Hamilton) and Judy Penning (Garry). He has sixteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, sister Joanne Chavez and brother Frank Desimone. His wife, Alice, preceded him in death in 2013. The family of Jack Sr. would like to express our thanks and gratitude to Steve Worral,, Randie Dickens and staff at Farmington Square.
