James R. Bennett

June 21st, 1930 - April 15th, 2020

James Richard (Jim) Bennett, born June 21, 1930, passed peacefully April 15, 2020 in McMinnville, OR. Jim was born in Multnomah County, Oregon. He lived with his parents James Dew, Thelma Dew and sibling Betty Bennett. He grew up with, and married, his school sweetheart Virginia on April 1, 1948. Jim was an avid community member and played an active role in youth wrestling within Calaveras County, CA. In 1973, Jim helped found and was head coach for the Calaveras Youth Wrestling Club. An annual tournament was later named after him. The Jim Bennett Classic lives on today in honor of him. Jim was a kind, generous, and loving friend, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great great-grandfather. He is survived by his kids David (wife Candy), Terry, Sandy Secco (husband Gene), Sue Mathews (husband Wayne) and Ron. His 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great, great-grandchild call him “grandpa or papa”. Jim was always our go-to guy for outdoor activities including walks in the woods, carving walking sticks and teaching his grandkids how to swim.

Oh Mr. B. you are and will be missed every day. I am so blessed to have had the time we shared as neighbors for as long as I did. Certainly I wish I would have known you and Mrs. B. earlier but am grateful for the time we had. I so appreciated the visiting, your sense of humor and your advice on all kinds of stuff. You and Mrs. B. are reunited and that makes my heart happy. I will see you on the other side my dear friends, so save up some stories cause we will have some serious visiting to catch up on.

Jimmy, I remember you as one tough guy!! Always so 'big' to my short stature! But your heart is what matters and your heart was full of love and caring about others. I love your sense of humor too. Rest now, with no pain, strength and time to sing praises with our others that have gone before you - especially Virginia - the love of your life.

Jim was a pillar in the community and especially the wrestling community. I was fortunate to coach with him when I first came to Calaveras High School in the early’80’s. He loved the sport and the kids he coached. He was a strong disciplinarian with a kind heart and loving touch.
