James "Jim" R. Franks

Jim Franks, 68, of Greeley, CO passed away August 25, 2015 in Greeley. He was born November 26, 1946 in Omaha, NE to Warren and Wilma (Wright) Franks. He moved to Denver, CO as a toddler with his parents. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Denver in 1964. He held various jobs until he enlisted in the United States Army Reserve in 1967 and was discharged in 1972. He was a medic at Fort Sam Houston burn unit for one year. Jim loved his family as well as fishing, hunting, camping and woodworking. Jim met Nedra Smith May 30, 1968 and they were married September 12, 1969. He joined the Greeley Police Department on January 1, 1969 and worked there until 1975 when be began work at Weld County Sheriff’s Department. He retired January 1, 2006. During his tenure as a Deputy with the Sheriff’s Office he was a patrol officer, a member of the SWAT team, K-9 Unit, firearm instructor, drug task force and training officer. He enjoyed working with his fellow officers and the community. Jim is survived by his wife Nedra; sons, Greg Franks and Mike (Stacy) Franks; grandchildren Anthony, Shaelyn, MacKenzie and Teagan; his mother, Wilma; and brother, Robert (Charlotte) Franks. He was preceded in death by his father. A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be 1:00p.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at Journey Christian Church, 4754 W. 31st Street, Greeley.
