James William Hurd III, 77, passed away at the Viera Hospital in Viera, FL, on April 30, 2020, with his loving wife, Alice, by his side. Jim was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend to many, including his adoring cat and buddy, Milo. Words cannot express the sadness of losing the love and laughter, and the kindness and joy that we all have shared with Jim. Listen closely and you might just hear it in the wind, or your quiet thoughts when you think of him. Jim was born on March 2, 1943 to the late James and Clara Hurd in Kingsport, TN. Jim graduated from Oak Ridge High School in the Class of 1961, where he enjoyed playing Defense on the Oak Ridge Wild Cats’ Football Team for all 4 years. After graduation Jim joined the USAF, where he continued his electronics training. When he got out, he followed his family to the Space Coast, where Jim enjoyed being a great electronic sales engineer for over 35 years. Jim retired in 2008, and he really enjoyed his retirement! Jim loved RVing, whenever and wherever we decided to go. Visiting the National Parks, viewing the amazing sights, seeing wild animals in their natural habitats (from afar), learning about places and things as we went, and having many exciting side trips along the way. Jim loved playing golf as often as he wanted! As the years went by, we spent a lot more time visiting our family and friends, instead of seeing so many sights. This truly would not be about Jim, if we did not mention that he loved fixing things. He could often be found taking something apart, fixing it, and making it even better when he finished. Jim was one of the good guys. He always had time to talk, share a laugh, or help. A neighbor sent a note to us, that says it all: “Jim was just simply the best man and he will be missed.” Jim is survived by his wife of 21 years, Alice. Also, by his stepdaughter, Nicole Banks, and other family members including Deborah Banks, Nickie and Gail Banks, Pamela Banks and Donnie Green. Jim is also survived by his beloved sister and friend, Brenda Walsh, and Jim’s nephew and good friend, Will. Will’s wife, Connie, and their family; also, by his niece Tracy and Mark Cowan and their family; Jim’s sister Nancy (Doug) Steiner; and his sister-in-law Helen Anne Hurd and family; and several cousins and great nephews and nieces. Jim is also survived by his 2 sons and their families; Steven and Lori Hurd, and Jim’s grandchildren A.J. and Brandon; and Brian and Paula Hurd, and Jim’s grandchildren Emily, Lauren and Connor. Jim was predeceased by his parents, his cherished sister Jean MacNeal, his brother John Hurd, and his nephew Scott Walsh. Cremation has taken place, and a private Celebration of Jim’s Life will be held at a future time for his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jim’s name could be made to your favorite charity, or to Meals on Wheels (address is: Aging Matters in Brevard, Meals on Wheels, 3600 King St., Cocoa, FL 32926).
