Viegut Funeral Home
James Frederick Miller
July 2nd, 1938 - February 4th, 2023
James (Jim) Frederick Miller, who loved the Lord God with all of his heart, went to be with Jesus in Heaven on February 4th, 2023, following a battle with esophageal cancer that was detected in January of 2022. Born on July 2nd, 1938 to Carl Frederick and Vivian Marie Miller of Denver, Jim was the youngest of 3 children. He grew up in Evergreen, Colorado and he attended Evergreen High School. In 1955, at the age of 17, Jim enlisted in the Navy. He served 4 years active duty as a Naval Interior Communications Electrician, on the USS Taylor DDE-468. The subsequent 17 years were spent in the Navy Reserves. He returned to Denver in 1961 and began his career with AT&T. On November 27th, 1965, he married Kathleen Marie (Kathy) Struck, in Denver. In 1970 he transferred to Mountain Bell in Boulder, where he was promoted twice, and became a supervisor. Mountain Bell later became US West Communications, where he was a second level manager of marketing. He retired in February 8th, 1990. After working a few odd jobs, he fully retired in 1998. Jim was an avid skier growing up and into his adult life. He loved the outdoors and spent a good deal of time devoted to hiking (he summited 15 of Colorado’s fourteeners), camping, fishing, and hunting. He loved classical music, silent movies, Polka dancing, The National Western Stock Show and traveling. In his retirement, Jim and Kathy traveled to 11 countries and Kauai multiple times over the next 23 years. Jim loved to cultivate his vegetable garden at his home in Niwot and had quite the green thumb. He and Kathy spent summers in Glenwood Springs, then in Rifle, at their second home. In the last year, Jim was very thankful for the growth opportunity that the cancer diagnosis gave him. He spent his time reading though the Bible, renewing his knowledge about Jesus Christ. He loved the Lord God with all his heart. He loved all his family, and treasured his beloved wife, Kathy. He is survived by his wife Kathleen (Kathy) his 4 daughters, 20 grandchildren and 1 great grandson; Alicia (Tom) Ames, and their children Madison, Mckensie, Maci (Tanner), Isaac and Noah; Jennifer (Rick) Hammon and their children Ricky, Hannah (Damien), Grace (Hayden), Thomas, Samuel, Anndrea, Zane, Elijah, Gabriel, Percy, and Great Grandson Oliver; Laura (Robert) Gavlas and their children Caleb, Isabelle and David; Elizabeth (Lance) Avery and their daughter Alaina. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother Kenneth Miller, his older sister Joann Sherman, his son Thomas Eugene Miller and his grandson Riley Thomas Ames. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mountain States Children’s Home, or The Gideon’s International, which were both organizations that Jim loved. Mountain States Children’s home is a ministry for families and children in crisis. The Gideon’s International is an Evangelical Christian association for men, that provides copies of scripture to be shared in God’s timing. Burial will be Saturday February 11, 2023 at 10:00am at Loveland Burial Park with Funeral service at 11:00am at Good Shepherd Church in Loveland, CO with a reception following service at the church.
