Online Obituaries for Lexington, Frankfort, and Versailles KY James Francis Omohundro, 78, husband of Jeannine Toebbe Omohundro, died Saturday, January 30, 2016 at his residence in Lexington. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, son of the late Frank Francis and Mary Elizabeth Henry Omohundro. He was an artist and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the U.S.S. Boston to Valparaiso, Chili, and as a radarman on the U.S.S. Salem throughout the Mediterranean and the Eastern Atlantic. He received the Navy Occupation Service Medal. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, reading, writing, cartooning, refinishing furniture and history. Surviving besides his wife are his daughters ; Leslie Omohundro Bruner, Dawn Michelle Omohundro, both of Lexington, his sons; James Vincent Omohundro, Lexington, Douglas Montgomery {Sherie} Omohundro, John Burwell Omohundro, all of Versailles, his sister; Carol {John} Melton, Springboro, Ohio, his eight grandchildren; Raleigh {Sylvie} Bruner, Michelle {Scott} Fisk, all of Lexington, Blake {Erin} Bruner, Charlotte, North Carolina, Benjamin Bruner, Candace Bruner, Elisabeth Bruner, Alexandra {Alan} Penney, all of Lexington, and Hunter Omohundro, Versailles, his four great grandchildren; Anastasia Fisk, Alessandra Fisk, Juliette Bruner and Roman Bruner. He devoted his life to his family and his art, and has many paintings in galleries across the country. After graduating from Central Academy of Art in Cincinnati, he began his career in commercial art, always painting fine art and architectural renderings. Ambidextrous, he could paint with a brush in each hand. He loved to sketch special requests from his grandchildren while they were sitting on his knees. While serving as a member of the Lexington Jaycee's, he taught art to children at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, and helped with the Jaycee's Bluegrass Air Show. His artistry ranged all the way from fine art to even designing a poster for Jimmy Buffet's 'Save the Manatee' campaign. He loved animals, and kept them supplied with treats. A member of The Texas Jack Omohundro Association, he painted a series on Texas Jack, his ancestor. His favorite fishing spots were the Kentucky River, Jessamine Creek, the Outer Banks, and Florida. He was a member of the Shanty Hill Sportsman's Club. He had a soft spot for the VA Center employees, who nicknamed him the "Candy Man," because he kept giving them chocolates. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Funeral Information His visitation will be 9 - 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 4, 2016 at Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, followed by his Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 am.. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. at Camp Nelson National Cemetery.
