James Ralph Squires Ralph, 70, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at White Oak Manor. He was born on January 2, 1940 in Dillon, SC son of the late William G. and Ruby W. Squires. Mr. Squires graduated from Central High School, Charlotte, NC in the class of 1958. In 1970, he founded the Ralph Squires Construction Company. The company became the leader in the home building industry in Charlotte, NC and Charleston, SC and built more then 4000 homes in the sixteen years it was in business and under his leadership. Ralph Squires Homes was recognized in the 1987 Professional Builder Index of Housing Giants as the 267th largest firm in the nation. In 1987, the Ralph Squires Company was sold to a British firm. In addition to having a successful career, Mr. Squires was active in his community as a member of Calvary Church, where he served on the Advisory Board, Park Meridian Bank Executive Committee and Board of Directors, First Landmark Board of Directors, Safari Club International/Charlotte Board of Directors and Vice President, Regional Director of the March of Dimes, Chairperson of Mercy Hospital Foundation, UNCC Athletic Foundation Board of Directors, Muscular Dystrophy Board of Directors, United Cerebral Palsy Board of Directors, Providence Day School Board of Directors, Charlotte Symphony Board of Directors and North Carolina Wildlife and North Carolina Bar Council, both of which were Governor appointed positions. In addition to his parents, Mr. Squires was preceded in death by his son, J. Drew Squires; sisters, Doris S. Kudo and Cynthia S. Empey. He is survived by his son, Samuel G. Squires and wife, Paige; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth B. Thomisser; grandchildren, Julia A. Squires, Alexander J. Squires and Abigail B. Squires; sisters, Carolyn S. Earney and Elizabeth S. Young; and a brother, William G. Squires, Jr. Throughout his life, Ralph was loved by his family, he was a friend to many and was generous with his time and treasure. He will be missed. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, September 12, 2010 at Providence Baptist Church, 4921 Randolph Rd. Charlotte, NC 28211. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The ALS Association, Jim ?Catfish? Hunter Chapter, 120-101 Penmarc Drive, Raleigh, NC 27603 or to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204
