James R. Stanton, 84, of Bayard Street, Amsterdam and Edinburg, NY passed away on February 12, 2015 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam with his loving family at his side. Born in Amsterdam on July 1, 1930, he was the son of the late Haskell M. and Clara Waterstreet Stanton. He was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School and he was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War serving in Germany. He was employed as a machinist at the Mohasco Corp.; General Fibre Box Co., Basco Machine Shop and Noteworthy Co. Machine Shop, retiring in 1995. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing and spending summers at camp in Edinburg on the Great Sacandaga Lake. Mr. Stanton was a member of the Amsterdam United Methodist Church serving as Trustee and usher for many years and the American Legion Post 701. Survivors include his best friend and wife of 50 years Martha Gode Stanton whom he married April 11, 1964, three loving children; Amy and husband Patrick Rogers of Broadalbin, Linda and husband John Hayduk of Chapel Hill, NC, James and wife Stephanie Stanton of Greenville, SC, six beloved grandchildren; Joseph Rogers, Timothy, Daniel and Lia Hayduk, Anna and Samuel Stanton, sisters-in-law Katherine Stanton and MaryKay Stanton, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two brothers; Robert and Haskell Stanton, Jr. A memorial service will be held Monday, February 16th at 2 pm at the United Methodist Church, Golf Course Road, Amsterdam with the Rev. Carl Chamberlain officiating and with Military Honors to follow. The family will receive relatives and friends 1 hour prior from 1 to 2 pm at the church. Burial will take place in spring at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Tribes Hill, NY. Memorial contributions in memory of James can be made to the Amsterdam United Methodist Church, 347 Golf Course Road, Amsterdam, New York 12010 or to the Community Hospice of Amsterdam, 246 Manny's Corners Road, Amsterdam, New York 12010. Funeral services have been entrusted to the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, New York 12010.
