James Clyde Treat was born in Marsh, Montana. He is the son of Robert Anders Treat and Berenice (Brooks) Treat. Jim peacefully passed away at home with his wife, LaVonne Wood Treat, by his side. Jim is survived by his wife, LaVonne, his brother Richard, son Mark, grandchildren Marcus and Elexis, and great grandson Colton. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mark’s mother Elsie, his brothers Robert, Donald and Philip, and his sisters Joyce and Lois. Jim gained an extended family after he and LaVonne wed; stepson Scotty, daughter-in-law Julie and step-grandsons Daniel and Scott. Along with his 4 brothers and 2 sisters, Jim was raised in several locations in Montana before the family moved to Pomona, California. Jim attended Pomona High School but left before graduation to begin his career in the military. While serving his country, he earned his HS diploma equivalency, and following his service time he earned an Associate of Applied Science Degree at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. Jim served 3 ½ years in the US Navy during WWII, having eaten 5 pounds of bananas to qualify. He reenlisted and served another 26 years in the US Air Force and qualified for specialized training in aeronautical engineering. He served as an Airplane Inspector and Aircraft Mechanic, achieving the rank of Senior Master Sergeant before retiring. He served during three major conflicts, WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, taking him to the Pacific for duty in China, Guam and Cambodia, then to Africa, Britain, and back to McChord Air Force Base, Tacoma, Washington for his final honorable discharge in 1974. He then settled with his family in Cottage Grove, Oregon, enjoying fishing, camping, RVing and golf. He joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3473 in Cottage Grove and rose through the ranks, Junior Vice Commander to Post commander, also serving as District 13 Commander for the State of Oregon. Jim also participated in the Oregon Veterans Boxers Association, reviving interests that he enjoyed in his early Navy service, forging friendships, sharing memories and exchanging tall tales. In 2007, Jim married LaVonne and moved to Portland, Oregon and enjoyed traveling to see family, friends and exotic places. Their most memorable trip was a 22-day cruise to Antarctica in 2015. Jim will be interred with military honors at Willamette National Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Vista Room, Courtyard Village at Raleigh Hills on Saturday, May 12, 2018 @ 2:00pm.
