James H. Wallace

February 17th, 2011

September 18, 1930- February 17, 2011 When life puts a mountain in front of you….. put on your hiking boots. Jim Wallace was born in 1930 in San Rafael, California to Aaron and Alice Wallace. He graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1948. He attended Oregon State University and received his Bachelors in Business and a minor in Forestry in 1952. Three days before graduation he married his collage sweetheart Hilda M. Leopold and then began a 20 -year career with the US Air Force. He retired as a Lt. Col and he was stationed in Germany, Philippines, Thailand, Iceland and various places around the Unites States. After retiring Jim worked as the director of Administrative Services at the University of Portland for 15 years. Throughout Jim’s life he enjoyed spoiling his family and hiking outdoors. As a member of the Mazamas he hiked all over the world- including Tibet when he was 70. In the last few years you could often find him taking long walks around Hillsboro. He had a heart for service and has volunteered his time at the local library and AARP tax aid service up until his passing. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Hilda, daughters Linda Wallace (partner Doug Reynolds) and Cheri Meeker (husband Paul), grandson Bob Herrera, granddaughters Amy Herrera, Becca Johnson (husband Nick), Stephanie Meeker, and great grandson Sawyer Johnson. Jim Wallace was my friend. I've been a Mazama hike leader for many years now and I count Jim as one of my main mentors. He was always glad to see me in subsequent years and I enjoyed the hell out of calling him "The Colonel". We hiked together, we edited together and we shared a bunch of Mazama Used Equipment Sales. When I go out on the trail I will always somewhat be walking in his boots.

My condolences to the family of Jim. Jim has been a wonderful volunteer for the Tax-Aide program. His contributions will be sorely missed by the taxpayers he served and by his many friends in Tax-Aide. He will be remembered for his years of giving of himself.
