The family of James B. Woodall, Jr. is deeply saddened by his death on March 15, 2023, at the age of 82. Born December 28, 1940, in Atlanta, Georgia, James was the son of James and Bay Woodall. He earned a BS degree in Physics, and an MBA degree from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he also played varsity basketball. James was a retiree from IBM, where he worked as a marketing representative and manager. He was married to Janet Vittur Woodall for 60 years, and they had two sons, James Gregory (Greg) and David Bradley Woodall (Brad). James (Jim) and Janet were united in always making their family the priority in their lives. He enjoyed coaching Greg and Brad’s youth baseball teams, and was very proud to coach Brad’s American Legion South Carolina State Championship team in 1987, which included some of his favorite players and Greg as his assistant coach. Jim and Janet loved following Brad’s baseball career as it progressed to college at UNC-Chapel Hill, and then to professional baseball, travelling to many minor and major league venues to see him pitch for the Braves, Brewers, and Cubs organizations. Once his grandson (Josh) was old enough to play baseball, he assisted Greg in coaching his youth league teams. He always led an active lifestyle, enjoying working in the yard, bird hunting with his hunt club buddies, attending his grandchildren’s sports events, and fishing with his sons and grandchildren. With the arrival of his grandchildren (Josh, Megan, Ryanne, and Kyra), Jim became known as “Pops”. He was a very proud grandfather, who loved following his grandchildren in their various sports and activities. One of Pops’ proudest moments was when he was able to fish with “3 generations of Woodalls” in the same boat including himself, Greg, and Josh. Some of his favorite times were spent at the ball field or courtside, watching Josh and Megan’s travel and high school baseball, softball, and volleyball. Pops loved travelling to Wisconsin to visit Ryanne and Kyra, and enjoyed watching them compete at swim meets and perform in ballets. He was excited to become a great grandfather with the birth of Josh and Savannah’s first son, Asher, in August 2021. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Bay Woodall, his sister, Eleanor Gardner and brother in law, Tom Gardner. He is survived by his wife, Janet; sons, Greg (Laurie), and Brad; grandchildren, Josh (Savannah), Megan, Ryanne, Kyra; great grandson Asher; brother in law, David Vittur (Donnie); and nieces and nephews. A private memorial will be held with family at a later date. South Carolina Cremation Society is assisting the family.
