James "Al" Alan Young
August 11th, 2024 - February 26th, 2024
James Alan Young, better known as Al or Jimmy, passed away peacefully Monday, February 26, 2024, with family at his side. Born August 11, 1956, to the late Donald and Annette Young of Syracuse, NY. He received an Associates degree in Journalism from State University of New York and a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising from Penn State University. The majority of his career was spent in the newspaper business. Starting as a reporter for the daily paper in Camden from 1979 – 1981, then moving to Manning and The Manning Times (1981 – 1999), where he started as a reporter and was later named Publisher. He later moved to Berkeley County started his own weekly newspaper in Moncks Corner, The Monitor, until he sold it in 2003. During his career, he received many awards from the SC Press Association for his writing, photography and design. After his time in the newspaper business, he shifted gears into buying and selling cars. Spending most of that time with Stokes Honda in N. Charleston. After retiring, he filled his free time with his love of writing which resulted in the completion of his first (and only) book. Unique is one of the best ways to describe Al and the life he lived. Memories of cherished trips to New York, Niagara Falls, Lake Placid, and 1000 islands. His knowledge and love of music and movies is something he shared with his children and grandchildren. Most importantly, the sarcastic humor that you had to love about Al, will live on among each of his daughters. He is survived by his 4 daughters, Heather Young of Westville, Ivy (Curt) Howard of Summerville, Holly (John Timmons) McCabe of Manning, and Sabrina (Zack) O’Dell of Georgetown. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Alissa and Dean Howard, Bridget and Victoria (Tori) McCabe, Addison, McKinley, Carter and Hampton Timmons, Shiloh and Charleigh Hood and Haisley O’Dell. Al is also survived by his 3 brothers, Tom (Marianne) Young, Donny (Cindy) Young, Rob (Sara) Young and sister, Maribeth (Steve) Wood and 9 nieces and nephews. The family will hold a Celebration of Life for Al at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice. Also, if you would like to share memories with his family, please do so on his Facebook page (Al Young).
