Janice "Jan" L Coates, BA, MA

October 2nd, 1936 - March 7th, 2024

1 Corinthians 13:1-7

Janice "Jan" L. Coates (Sawyer) passed away peacefully on March 7, 2024, in Wheatridge, CO, at the age of 87. She was born on October 2, 1936, in Sherman County, Kansas.

Jan lived a life defined by love, compassion, and service, embodying the principles of 1 Corinthians 13:1-7 in her interactions with everyone she encountered. After graduating from Mount Air High School in 1954, she pursued her passion for education at the University of Northern Colorado, where she majored in elementary education. After marrying Carl Jan went on to earn her MA from Adams State.

In 1955, Jan met Carl, the love of her life, at a church retreat outside of Boulder. They shared a deep connection and were married on August 23, 1957. Their union was blessed with six children: Steve, Dave, Mike, Susan, Christi, and Diane. Jan dedicated herself to raising her children with boundless love and support.  She also showed the same love and dedication to her grandchildren, choosing to stay involved in numerous ways.

As their children grew and left the nest, Jan and Carl embraced new adventures together. They fulfilled Carl's dream of becoming a pilot and owning their own plane. In 1987, Carl talked Jan into going to ground school so that she could assist in the cockpit, eventually obtaining her pilot's license. Together, they explored the skies, traveling across the country and creating cherished memories.

Jan was a woman of many talents and interests. A skilled seamstress, she also found joy in creating beautiful quilts.  In 1988 Jan joined th Alpha Phi chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha a philanthropic, educational, and social organization, becoming a lifetime member. She also had a passion for reading, painting, sketching, and nurturing her creative spirit.

Jan is survived by her devoted husband of over 66 years, Carl Coates, her children Steve Coates (Cheryl 4 children and 5 grandchildren), (Robyn Coates and 2 children) Mike Coates (Elsa and 2 children), Susan Padgett (Craig), Christi Fielding (1 daughter and 1 granddaughter), and Diane Ellison (Oliver and 6 children). She is also survived by her sisters Joanne Ranley (Tom) and Judith McDaniels. Jan's memory will be forever cherished by her grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Frances Sawyer, her brother Gary Sawyer, her son David Coates, and her grandson Joren Coates.

A memorial service celebrating Jan's remarkable life will be held on April 20, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Lakewood United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Saint Jude's Hospital, Easter Seals, or Collier Hospice in her memory. Jan's legacy of love, dedication to family, and pursuit of her passions will continue to inspire all who knew her.
