Jan Veteto: Beloved Mother and Oma
Janice Elizabeth Veteto, beloved mother and Oma, unexpectedly passed into the arms of Jesus on September 16, 2024. Born on September 4, 1946, in Paterson, New Jersey, she was the youngest of six children in the Cauwels family, raised by her loving parents, Frank and Irene. Although she was born in New Jersey, Jan always considered Maryland, where she grew up, to be her true home.
Jan met and married John Veteto, her husband of 55 years, while attending John Brown University. After graduation, they moved to Colorado Springs, where John joined the family business and Jan began her career as a high school English teacher. Jan put her teaching on hold to raise their three children: Jonathan, Jennifer, and Jared. Once her children were older, Jan fulfilled a lifelong dream by earning another degree and becoming a librarian. She cherished her time as a librarian at various institutions, including Colorado Springs Christian School, Divine Redeemer, Air Academy High School, several schools in District 11, as well as running the Professional Resource Library for District 11.
Jan was a treasured friend to many, actively participating in numerous groups and activities, from Bible studies, and the praise team to the Friends of the Pikes Peak Library District. She was a tireless volunteer and always on the go. She found a special calling in the Stephen Ministry at First Presbyterian Church, serving on its leadership team and contributing in various roles. Her strong faith in God began at an early age - she often remarked that God started His work on her when she was just five, knowing she would face a challenging growth journey.
Her greatest joy came from being a mother and an “Oma.” She never missed a school play, sporting event, or opportunity to show up for her grandkids. Jan trekked to Disneyland, Disney World, beaches from California to Maryland, Taos and Crested Butte creating cherished memories with her grandchildren. Always eager to spend time with them, she delighted in babysitting, horse events, sledding, snowshoeing, playing board games, puzzles, sewing costumes, and baking together. To her family, she was the biggest fan and an unwavering source of support.
Jan is survived by her children, Jonathan (Mary-Clare), Jared (Anna), and Jennifer Bain; her grandchildren, Zoe, Graham, Phoebe Bain, and Rowan Veteto; her siblings, Dolly Snyder, Jack (Betty) Cauwels, David (Johnell) Cauwels, and Paul (Jacque) Cauwels; her mother-in-law, Jayne Veteto; her sisters-in-law, Sarah (Doug) Scherling, Jayne (Jim) Tomlin; her brother-in-law, Steve (Cris) Veteto; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband John in March of 2023, her parents Frank and Irene, and sister Lois.
We just said goodbye to our dad and our hearts are broken once more, but as we navigate the profound loss of our mom, we remember the love and joy she brought into our lives and are assured of her presence in heaven with our dad.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her honor to Family Life Services.
