Janice P. Windsor
August 26th, 1934 - June 6th, 2024
Janice P. Windsor, 89, of Windsor, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2024 at the Good Samaritan Society-Water Valley Assisted Living in Windsor. She was born August 26, 1934 in Kansas City, Missouri to Elden Paul and Jeanette Frances (Smallfeldt) Priebe. Janice moved with her family as a young girl to Tulsa, Oklahoma and graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1952. She then attended Colorado A & M and graduated with honors in 1956 with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Science. She was an active member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority, the editor of the school’s yearbook and served on an advisory board for the college president. Janice met her future husband while attending Colorado A & M and married John Clark Windsor, Jr. on June 9, 1956 in Denver, CO. They were married 67 years. Over the years the couple lived in Durango, CO; Lakewood, CO; Custer, SD; Sundance, WY; back to Custer, SD; and finally Windsor, CO.
Janice was active at whatever church the family was attending, be it transporting friends to the Episcopal Church in Hot Springs, volunteering at the Episcopal Church in Sundance, volunteering with the youth at the Lutheran Church in Custer, and becoming a Deacon for the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado, serving at St. Albans Episcopal Church for many years. After retiring as a deacon she stayed involved at St. Albans until her passing, volunteering for various needs, and reading scripture once a month. One of her favorite things was doing the dismissal at the end of the service, and she did it as recently as Sunday before she passed.
Janice was always active and involved in the communities she lived and the lives of her family and friends. If her children were involved in some activity she was involved in some way. She was a den mother, 4H leader, parent cheerleader for the activities of her children, delivered for Meals on Wheels, took communion to shut-ins, was a member of the Windsor Garden Club, taught swimming lessons and was part of the Accountability Committee at the schools in Windsor. In her community-minded spirit, she was instrumental in starting a YMCA in Custer, S.D. Janice had a green thumb and loved to garden. Her garden was always bountiful and Janice shared all the vegetables with her community. She was known to bake wonderful bread, loved the outdoors and camping. She taught all her children to sew and she was an avid reader.
When she and her husband moved to Windsor, they began growing Christmas trees and she and John ran the family business for 30 plus years. It was always a joy for Janice to provide many families with the opportunity to make memories by coming to their tree farm and cutting Christmas trees.
She is survived by her children, Jerry Windsor and wife Peggy of Windsor, CO, Andy Windsor and wife Paula Martin of Paonia, CO, Paul Windsor and wife Lori of Harrison, Nebraska and Anne Windsor and husband Jon Baker of Mukilteo, Washington; 8 grandchildren, Josh Windsor, Sarah Windsor, Zach Windsor, Mary Douglas, Cynthia Douglas, Audrey Patchett, Arvid Carlson, and Amanda Forst and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Services will be held at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 311 6th St, Windsor, CO at 2:00 PM Sunday July 14th. There will be a reception following the service at the Windsor’s Christmas Tree Farm, 33745 Hwy 257 Windsor, CO 80550.
