Jerome G. Garrels

Jerome Gilbert Garrels, 74, of Colorado Springs, CO passed away Saturday evening March 3, 2018 at home with his family around him. He was born to Gilbert and Eva (Garrett) Garrels of Diller. NE on October 20, 1943. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Pauls Lutheran Church at Diller. He served in the Navy from 1961 to 1964 serving as a torpedo man aboard the USS Power DD839 mainly in the Mediterranean Sea area. Upon return home he worked for Lally Mfg. Co. of Fairbury and lived at the fire hall where he started to really like being a volunteer fireman. In 1968 he moved to Colorado Springs and became a 26 year veteran of the Colorado Springs fire department. On March 20, 1970 he married Donna Krause in Colorado Springs, CO. To this union one daughter Donell was born. After retirement he did handyman jobs for people along with a couple other retired firefighters. He is survived by his wife Donna of Colorado Springs, daughter Donell (Kevin) Miller and daughter Dakota of Calhan, CO, sister Sandra (Harold) Stelling and sister-in-law Lorlea (Randy) Mees of Fairbury, NE nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. There will be no services per his request as cremation has taken place. We are asking that no flowers be sent and instead that a donation would be made in his name for the International Firefighters Memorial.
