Jerome D. Luntz
June 17th, 1923 - September 9th, 2012
Jerome D. Luntz, passed away on September 9, 2012, in his 89th year. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Elfriede, his step-daughter Susi, and son-in-law, John Stodieck. Jerry was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York where he attended Brooklyn Technical High School and was editor of The Survey, the school newspaper. After graduation from the School of Engineering at City College of New York, he was inducted into the Army where he worked on the Manhattan Project. Upon returning home, he moved into the publishing and communications industry, working for The McGraw-Hill Companies where he was publisher of Nucleonics Magazine before rising to become Senior Vice President of Planning and Development. As part of the Executive Committee at McGraw-Hill, Jerry was responsible for new ventures, mergers and acquisitions, corporate planning and establishment of joint venture companies in France, Germany, Italy and Japan. He was the representative of the US publishing industry at the 1973 Copyright Convention on a Federal mission to the USSR which ended the USSR's self-imposed isolation in copyright matters concerning scientific and technical information. Throughout his career Jerry also held the positions of Vice President for Corporate Development at Newsweek, Executive Vice president at Knowledge Industry Publications, and CEO of Seminar Development Corporation. As Vice Chair of the Information Industry Association, he was instrumental in the creation of the Small and Emerging Business Council of the association. Jerry was the principal founder of the American Nuclear Society, the professional organization for nuclear scientists, and a member of various White House and National Academy of Sciences study teams in the information field. In 1989 Jerry partnered with his longtime friend, Anver Suleiman, and established the consulting firm of Luntz, Suleiman and Associates, headquartered in Florida. After moving to St. Pete Beach in 1998 Jerry pursued his various interests such as tennis, opera, poker and life-long learning at the Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College, where he served as a senator and founded and edited ASPEC insights, a newsletter on current issues and ideas.
