Jerry Thomas Munday
August 29th, 1933 - December 10th, 2013
Jerry Munday, 80, of Matthews, died on December 10, 2013 at Plantation Estates in Matthews. He was born August 29, 1933 in Statesville, NC, son of the late Thomas Clay and Ila Rinehardt Munday. Jerry grew up in Mooresville and graduated from Mooresville High School in 1951; he also received a diploma from the National Guild of Piano Teachers. He studied at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of South Carolina in 1961. Jerry served his country honorably in the U.S. Army 1954-1956. From 1959 to1978, he held engineering positions with BAC Steel Products, Allied Chemical, and Dayco. He joined Hoechst Celanese Corporation in 1979 and retired in 1994. He was issued several patents for synthetic fibers. Jerry was an involved member of Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he was active in the church choir. Music was his first love, and he was a church organist for most of his adult years. He played organ and keyboard at his church and at Plantation Estates for several years and was also a piano teacher and trombone player. A service in celebration of his life will be held at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, December 21, at Plantation Estates with The Reverend Larry Watts and The Reverend Lori Raible officiating. A reception will follow in the Atrium. He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Cara Bass Munday; daughters, Linda Larson and husband, Steve of Angier, NC and Cindy Hollis and husband, Heyward, of Atlanta, GA; son, Jerry Munday, Jr., of Pittsboro, NC; a sister, Rebecca Buchanan, of Holden Beach, NC; 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Plantation Estates Samaritan Fund of ACTS, Inc., c/o ACTS Retirement-Life Communities, P.O. Box 90, West Point, PA 19486 or Selwyn Avenue Presbyterian Church Music Ministry, 2929 Selwyn Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28209. J.B.
