Jerry R Smith
August 13th, 1946 - November 3rd, 2024
Jerry Ray Smith, age 78, of North Charleston, South Carolina, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, November 3, 2024, following a brief battle with cancer.
Jerry was born on August 13, 1946 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. He was raised on his family ranch in LaGrange, Wyoming, where they raised wheat and Quarter Horses. He graduated high school in Hawk Springs, Wyoming in 1964, then attended the University of Wyoming. In 1967, his junior year of college, he joined the US Navy (during the Vietnam War) as a Gunners Mate. Jerry spent the next 26 years serving his country proudly. He was stationed on both coasts and traveled the world, usually six months at a time. Jerry retired from the Navy in 1993. After a brief respite, he earned his HVAC certificate from Trident Technical College. He then began to work in the AC Shop at the Ralph H Johnson VA hospital in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. After 20 years, he retired from the VA Hospital.
Jerry enjoyed golfing and fishing, as well as watching any sport on TV. In the summer you could find him maintaining his pool. He enjoyed swimming by himself as well as with his grandchildren.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marlene, and his three children, Greg (Jeannette) Smith, Chris (Kristin) Smith, and Shannon (Jason) Reifsnyder. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Brownen Smith, Evan Smith, Justin Reifsnyder, Carolyne Reifsnyder, Conner Smith and Sara Kate Smith. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene M Smith and Dorothy J Smith, as well as his younger brother, Larry G. Smith.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, the family will share details when known. In lieu of flowers, Jerry’s family asks that you donate to either the Ralph H Johnson VA Health Care System or Tunnels to Towers in Jerry’s name.
