Joan was born on January 7, 1939 in Salem, Oregon to the daughter of Carroll and Minnie (Wilamina Mesmer) Baker. She grew up in the local area, attended Aurora Grade School and Graduated from North Marion High School. Joan married the love of her life, Gene (Chester Eugene, Jr.) Smith, on May 9, 1958 in Aurora, Oregon. They were married for 59 years. In 1972 Joan moved to Canby with her family. She lived there until her passing on November 12, 2017 at the age of 78. Joan worked at Tektronix for 5 years, opened and managed a gift shop at Bonneville Fish Hatchery for 8 years and worked at Fred Meyer's Playland. She took children into her home and babysat for 40+ years. She loved getting togeher with family and friends, going on outings, camping and beach trips. Besides family and friends Joan loved collecting Teapots. She is survived by her husband, Gene Smith, their 5 children: Mary Annette Norgren, Tracy Smith, Tara Joleen Nofziger, Jacqueline Gail Fuge and Dennis Scott Smith, 13 grandchildren and 21 great- grandchildren. There will be a viewing held on Sunday November 19, 2017 from 2 to 4 pm at the Canby Funeral Chapel, 160 S. Ivy Street, Canby, Oregon. A funeral service will be held on Monday November 20, 2017 at 11:30 am at the Canby Funeral Chapel. With burial to follow at Zion Memorial Park Cemetery in Canby, Oregon. Memorials in her memory may be sent to your own favorite charity.
